VPN KeyVPNs which one to choose?

So, you’ve decided you need a VPN, for reasons best known to you.

With so many competing products on the market today, how do you go about choosing the right one?

Here we present a small guide with useful links to more in-depth information.

Trust

Trust, it’s what it’s all about. When using online security products, it is useful to know something about the background of any company you choose to do business with. This is especially important when you are securing private or sensitive information. While researching which company will provide your VPN, the level of trust you attribute to the provider should be your main focus. So, do your own research (DYOR).

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

While a VPN can prevent others from spying on your online activities, you should be able to trust the VPN not to spy on you!

Unfortunately, some have been caught red-handed doing just that; sharing information with third parties. For example, PureVPN shared information about a user with the FBI, despite claiming to be a no-logs VPN.  A few years ago, IPVanish was doing the same thing.

Trade-Off

There has always been the issue of trading off between security and usability when securing your online communications. With VPNs, which ones to choose depends generally on the trade-off between the speed of the network and the trust you put in the provider. Your provider of choice should strike the right balance that makes you comfortable.

If streaming is your thing and you’d like to connect to Netflix™ in the US to watch shows not available in your country, then a fast network is essential. NORDVPN is a good example. However, if your requirement is for more security for your communications, you may trade speed for higher trust levels in the network and the VPN provider. ProtonVPN is a fine example of the latter.
