Passwords: Ad Nauseam

Passwords: Ad Nauseam

Not passwords again!? Yes, we’re afraid so, hence the title of this post.

We’ve discussed passwords on different levels and for different reasons and here we are again. We make no apology for bringing this dull but all-important subject to the fore once more. You see, we only have your best interests (and ours!) at heart.

One way or another, passwords are always in the news. They’re either being stolen in data breaches, mocked for being too simple; dismissed as pointless, or accused of being technologically backward.

Either way, one thing is certain; we’re going to be using them today, tomorrow, and for the foreseeable future. Unlike touch or facial recognition techniques, passwords are still lingua franca when it comes to access control because they’re cheap to implement and simple to use. For most users, they are as low-tech as security tech ever gets. Of course, that ubiquity and simplicity are exactly what makes passwords attractive to the scum that dwells in the underbelly of our Internet. In this post, we’ll just remind you of a few simple rules, with a couple of suggestions, to safeguard your online accounts.

Choose passwords carefully. Check here for the worst passwords used in 2019. Is yours on the list?

Don’t use the same passwords for different accounts.

Change your passwords for your accounts on a regular basis.

Use a password manager to remember all your complex passwords.

Never click on links in emails unless you are certain the email is genuine. Never, ever click ‘unsubscribe’ links in unwanted emails.

And that, for now, is the end of our reminder about good password management. Fear not though, we’ll be back soon to nag you some more about this subject.

Remember the bad guys, like the Internet, never sleep. You’re not being paranoid, they really are out to get you (or at least your passwords!)

Be vigilant, click safe!
